1955 Vogue Paris Designs

I have some fun pattern photos to share with you all today from the June 1955 issue of Vogue.  Here are the latest Vogue Paris Original patterns:

Vogue pattern 1298, Patou's pale-blue linen day costume.  It's a soft, short-sleeved jacket over a slender sleeveless dress cut in wide V's, front and back.

Vogue pattern 1299, a Paquin design for late-day.  The short-sleeved dress (black and white faille) has a black jacket with not-quite-long sleeves.

Vogue pattern 1303 from the Fath collection: a raspberry wool coal; an overblouse dress with a pleated skirt, of raspberry-dotted grey surah.
I found an image of the actual pattern on the Vintage Pattern Wiki:

The back-dipping jacket collar: Lanvin-Castillo's signature this year.  Natural shantung jacket over a slender black dress. Vogue pattern 1297.

This one was also in the Vintage Pattern Wiki:

Amazing designs, no?  I think the Patou design may be my favourite (though the Paquin one is in a close second for me).  I love how the Paquin one is for late-day as opposed to evening or early day.  Ah, to be Parisian in the 1950's....

Which one is your favourite?

  1. For me, it's 1229, but as it was the year of my birth, perhaps you should ask my mother!!!!

  3. I LURV the Paquin one. That bolero jacket, hmmm, I think I may have to have one in my wardrobe. :) Pity I don't have the figure for the rest of it, although an adaptation maybe? Very inspiring!

  4. I think you'd look really cute in the 1303 Jacques Faith overblouse dress outfit.   I also really like Patou's 1298 and Paquin's 1299 Va-va-va-voom outfits.   Meowrowr!

  7. I love the Paquin too - it is stunning!  I actually do get changed several times a day, but it is more likely to be due to painting the house or digging the garden, rather than some lovely late-day function!
Also I love the Lanvin jacket - I've always loved those collars.  And the Raspberry spot is gorgeous too!

  8. Oh wow. To get my hands on just one of those. Would have to be the Paquin 1299. They are so stunning each and every one. You have impeccable taste Ms Debi!

I have so much pattern envy when I see those. I want them all. I wonder if patterns actually sold for the price on the envelope back then? If so, these would be about $20 each in today's money. :]

  10. I'm in love with the first one, 1298. Her pose and that hat are rather striking!

  11. Aren't they all gorgeous. I think I love the Paquin best, but the first is also wonderful.

  12. I think they're all stunning.
I own some French and some Dutch magazines from the 1950's. The French glossy mags report quite loyally on all things couture, the houvewives' ones seem to echo the sentiment but offer 'watered down' versions as sewing patterns while the Dutch magazines (all of the 'for housewives' variety, there were no glossy fashion magazines in Dutch back then) discuss the Paris fashion scene with a mixture of envy, admiration and disdain (at its frivolity). I'm just loving all the great fashion pictures and it's interesting to see which lines did and which didn't stay in our collective memory as "50's fashion"

  14. They are all gorgeous but first one is my favourite. I love the neckline!

  15. I vote for the Patou. That neckline detail, with the tab-and-button, in pale blue linen? Oh, my 25-year-old self would have been all over that! 53-year-old self is seriously contemplating sewing up some maternity smocks, to accommodate changing body shape. I miss my waist. I miss my mind.

I agree! It's so fascinating to see the drop-waist 50's pattern! I love how the French and Dutch magazines differ!

Hi swap partner :)  I agree the hat totally makes that first outfit (as does her pose with flowers).  I'm just amazed at how flat the fabric lays with pockets!!
