Scotland Sundays: Writers' Museum

Welcome to another edition of Scotland Sundays (you didn't think I forgot about it, did you?).  I am super excited to highlight a really cool museum in Edinburgh called the Writers' Museum.

It's tucked away just off the Royal Mile through 'Lady Stair's Close', one of the many 'closes' or alleyways leading off the main historical road in Edinburgh:

The museum is small but packed with goodies and best of all, the entrance is free!  It is dedicated to three major Scottish writers: Sir Walter Scott, Robert Burns and Robert Louis Stevenson.  There are rooms dedicated to each writer with lots of neat historical artifacts, photos and samples of writing. There is even the printing press on which Sir Walter Scott's Waverly Novels were first produced! The museum also gives a bit of the history of the building which dates from 1622 and has been restored to much of it's original grandeur:

For this little outing, I donned a few of my me-mades.  I'm wearing my me-made 1950's Betty Blouse under my Ness Fair Isle jumper and my Simplicity 3688 Trousers (a reprinted pattern from 1941).

I also really love the outside of the museum.  On flagstones throughout the square are some lovely quotes from Scottish figures.  Here are a few of my favourites:

Though, very much the dork that I am...my favourite part is the lampost in the middle of the square.  Does it not look like the Chronicles of Narnia lampost??  I really want it to snow one day and then come to the lampost...maybe Mr. Tumnus will be waiting...

Happy Sunday everyone!

  1. I don't think you are a dork at all. As an English Lit major, this sounds like the perfect day to me! Lovely photos, thanks for sharing this previously unknown fascinating part of Scotland, a Writer's Museum. Who knew? I loved reading about it.

  5. I love your Scotland Sunday posts. Thank you for sharing your country with us. I love your outfit and I also love the lamp-post. My family thinks I'm crazy, but whenever we travel I take pictures of different lamp-posts.

  6. I saw a woman on the train today (Boston) wearing Ness boots! They looked so comfy and dry -- I just had to tell you, since I'd never know the name without your blog. :-P

  7. Dear Debi, that's so nice to read about this museum which to me is totally new, because it's years ago since I've been to Edinburgh (which I hope to visit soon). Your Scotland Sunday posts are really fascinating, and I'm looking forward to reading them next time I'm back from holidays.

  9. I've been to Edinburgh once and didn't know about this place. I'll have to put it on the list of "must see" the next time I go!

  10. Someday I will make it that far north (so far I think Woodstock is the northernmost place I've been in the British Isles--not very northerly!) so I can visit all the lovely places you've visited for Scotland Sundays. I always feel like I need more time when we're on vacation. Paul and I spent 6 weeks in France once and only made it out of Paris twice. We're very slow travelers. We meander.

I know! How neat would it be if it snowed and I made a 'Lucy' dress? :-)

Thanks Graca! I really want to get into reading more Scottish literature. Robert Louis Stevenson is a great place to start (as is Walter Scott and Robert Burns)....
