I just had to share these images. Maybe it's my recent work on David's Bonnie Prince Charlie jacket or this neat video on the making of James Bond suits but I've been much more acutely aware of menswear tailoring lately. So when I stumbled across the new Prada Menswear Fall/ Winter 2012 Collection, I gave a bit of a gasp. I love all these pieces. I think it helps that they are modeled by Gary Oldman, Garrett Hedlund, Jamie Bell, and Willem Dafoe.....I mean, how cool do they look?
David really wants a waistcoat like this (though not in white). Isn't it a clever design?
Look at the lapel on the purple jacket!! Those perfectly turned corners and nice roll lines. uh oh, I sense a slight obsession coming on! What do you think? Yay or nay for the steampunk inspired menswear collection?
I'm going to get the edwardian vest pattern from Folkwear to make that vest for my husband. Actually, I started getting 'eyes too big for my stomach' issues and was thinking that the vest really would not go all that well with his tux jacket and therefore, I'd have to make a frock coat (also Folkwear) to go with the vest. Which of course ends up with the 'If you give a mouse a cookie' problem all the way around.
ReplyDeleteI love steampunk menswear, it gives men's fashion an interesting twist as lets face it it's so boring in comparison to women's fashion! I wish I could persuade my man to wear this kind of stuff!
ReplyDeleteWow. Those are amazing. I have been drawn to steampunk patterns lately as well. I don't know if I would be bold enough to wear them, but I love the way they look!
ReplyDeleteWow! I didn't even recognize Gary Oldman or Jamie Bell! Great looks, they are handsome!
ReplyDeleteI'm torn. I love the idea that men might have some different options for a change. On the other hand, when we look back on it in a few years, this trend will probably look really silly.
ReplyDeleteOoh, if only OH wasn't such a scruffy biker/punk. Though he has mentioned a liking for steampunk before now, I'm not sure he'd take it this far. It took his sister getting married for him to even buy a regular suit jacket!
ReplyDeleteI love this look! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteDefinately a yes, great style will always be in fashion (Oh and Gary Oldman helps too)
ReplyDeleteDoesn't he though? I love how they used actors as models...they are all so perfect for the look!
ReplyDeleteteehee ..Maybe you can convince him??
ReplyDeleteI know! It took me a couple of seconds to recognize Gary Oldman!!
ReplyDeleteYou, my dear, could pull off steampunk very well!
ReplyDeleteIt does make it so much more interesting! I love how the whole ensemble is part of it in steampunk fashion....
ReplyDeletehahaha...that sounds perfect! I haven't seen the Folkwear Edwardian vest pattern...I must check that out. David is very into vests at the moment....and I really enjoyed working with the Folkwear pattern for the Bonnie Prince Charlie Jacket....can't wait to hear more about your sewing plans!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean! We could look back on all of this and be shaking our heads in disbelief ;-)
ReplyDeleteYay to the models anyway.
ReplyDeleteI love these. It might be a bit much for everyday wear, but the tailoring on these pieces is amazing.
ReplyDeleteHoly mackerel YAY! Yay to the clothes and the models! Now to get my husband interested in wearing those outfits (knock offs, naturally as we're not prada-affording people, but then, who is?) then my dream would be complete!
ReplyDeleteway yay. especially with dafoe and oldman in 'em. i think david would rock this style!
ReplyDeleteYay! Very much yay! Especially on those actors. :)
ReplyDeleteWell, since I lived through the '80s, this can't be much worse.
ReplyDeleteWhy, thank you, Oona.
ReplyDeleteI'd have fun with it.
We were talking about finding a solution to the jacket lapel construction problems tonight, so maybe we'll try it again. I have a few Laughing Moon Mercantile men's patterns...
A very big YAY from me. These clothes are inspired and I adore them on their models. Gary Oldman is one of my all time faves so it's cool to see him here. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYay from me! The cuts of those coats, jackets and waistcoats are amazing and very handsome and flattering (the models are also a big win to get me swooning!).
ReplyDeleteYay yay yay yay!!!!! I will DIE of happiness if you keep posting more things like this :)
ReplyDeleteThese are unbelievable! They are the most exciting outfits I've seen for ages, and no a girl insight!
ReplyDeleteAnything inspired by the historical and I am in menswear lurve! MrC really suits that kind of thing too, which helps :)
ReplyDeleteBig WOW-factor! Those men have Personality coming out the ears - Oldman is just amazing seeming so selfcontained and in control. Droolworthy :-)
ReplyDeleteOh, they are amazing! How refreshing to see this incredible detail, and new silhouettes for menswear. The sack suit has reigned supreme since the 1880s. I'm bored with it already.
ReplyDeleteI think that Dover Books has reprinted a book of menswear patterns from the 1890s -- there are some tailoring tips among the comments, and some interesting collar and pocket details. I know they've also done several collections of women's Victorian fashions.
ReplyDeleteWow, Willem Dafoe looks SO awesome in these pics. He's modelling that suit like a boss. Great find!
ReplyDeleteYay, yay, yay! :)
ReplyDeleteTotal love. Steampunk really tickles my fancy - it's so well tailored and there is so much to occupy the brain!
ReplyDeleteOh a big Yeah from me and S.H. we adore Steampunk, these are fabulous. Where to wear them, at the UK biggest Steampunk con in Lincoln in September.
ReplyDeleteSteampunk is such a fun style - I love it! I say Yay to steampunk for both men and women.
ReplyDeleteoh please do....
ReplyDeleteI think this is gorgeous! Great move getting such handsome men to model too!
ReplyDeleteOkay...This is way too cool. I'm going to have to update my wardrobe.
ReplyDeleteOMG. Positively dreamalicious. The clothes aren't too bad, either :)
ReplyDeleteI must say I really like the steam-punk look when it is done correctly. There is something alluring and sexy about it. Many times people try too hard and it looks ridiculous. If done correctly it is fab.
ReplyDeleteBRAVO!
ReplyDeleteLate to the party, but just want to weigh in anyway. This is the twenty-first century, right? Stuff, clothing, etc., should look different from the grubby 20th. So far, any suit I bought, in say 1998, hasn't aged that badly. Point I'm making is (rather, meandering to) I feel like we're all sort of stuck in a corporate Mao-jacket mentality, which also turns in to corporate strait-jacket mentality. Clothes are boring, cars are boring, the architecture is mindless and sterile: I LOVE the Edwardian look I'm seeing on this page, and wish to god I A. had the skill to make this stuff, and B. had the guts to wear it to work.
