I need to do more lounging...

Sorry for the silence on this end.  This last couple of weeks have been INTENSE at work and I'm still recovering!  So, I think it's appropriate that I have been working on a lounging outfit from the 1930's:

It's a good reminder to do more lounging!! Or to work on a better work/play balance!

I made this up in a really nice navy blue stretch satin that was a dream to work with.  The bow ties are in a cerise satin.

Overall, the unprinted pattern was pretty easy to sew.  It called for a placket on the side but since the material is stretchy and is quite low in the back, I found that I could just slip it on.  YAY!  The longest part was probably the blind hemming around the neckline and shoulders but even that went quickly once I stopped dragging my feet and actually started doing it :-)

Here I am lounging in my hotel room on a recent work trip:

The outfit is super comfortable.  The ties are removable so I can play with the color and the waist is tied with an obi style belt with a removable tie.

I love the back of the top:

And how wide the legs are:

I just love the color combo...plus it fits in with my spring/summer wardrobe planning:

Here's another view of the outfit:

Now I just need to make a bed jacket and some matching slippers.  I'm also thinking it would be fun to use this pattern to make a nautical inspired outfit from the 1930's.  It's a great basic pattern and I didn't have to make any changes to it, so I definitely plan on using it again!

  1. They're so elegant. If I was you I would give up working, become a lady of leisure and lounge around in these all day.

I am the luckiest man in the world!

You look so lovely - I'm so proud of you for diving in and doing so well on these projects. You're amazing!

  4. I never considered stretch satin for vintage lingerie, but it sounds like a brainwave -- it would certainly take care of a lot of fitting/binding/fastening issues! This outfit looks GREAT.

Those are some impressive lounging skills you've got! Lounging's not a very British activity, is it? "Huddling" is more appropriate. It's April and my current loungewear consists of long johns, a thick wool sweater and a wool blanket. Sexy!

  5. Wow, it's super pretty!
    And what a pajama-appropriate hotel-room they gave you :-).
Did you notice that there's a vintage sewing-competition on right now at pattern review? Something for you, perhaps?

  6. It came out so beautiful! Absolutely fantastic, great job. How have you resisted making 6 more sets and wearing one for every day of the week?

  7. Like I thought, it came out beautifully. Great job!

I now want a pair. It would make every weekend so much more better to wake up wearing that instead of the stash of oversized cotton t-shirts that I wear. (I wouldn't waste it on the workdays)

  8. Wonderful! It looks gorgeous on you! I want a pair too! I need some so I don't have to do what I normally do (which is the same as Susannah). Not so appealing for the husband....

  10. OK. No more sweats. No more flannel. No more cotton knit. After all, there is no law against sleeping (or whatever-ing) in something of a more luxurious nature. And we all deserve it.

  13. This is so glamourous and you look gorgeous in it. What a great idea to have lovely lounge wear instead of baggy stretch out PJs. You've done a great job and I particularly like the contrast ties.

  20. they/you look truly fabulous - it's a look i couldn't imagine being able to carry off in a million years, but you've made me want to try! (as do all your outfits, you can count yourself pretty much singlehandedly responsible for switching me on to 30s/40s fashions)

  21. Oh, that is truly lovely - and it would make a really fab nautical inspired outfit!
I like that the ties are interchangeable too!

  23. Hi Debbie,

I know it has been several years since you posted this pattern review but I was hoping you could help. I recently acquired a copy of this same lounge pajama pattern (Simplicity 1558) and mine did not come with the instructions. I thought I could figure it out easily enough but this one has me stumped. The main quandary is the bodice front and back pattern pieces do not match up with the back bodice being much shorter than the front. I can only assume there is an inset belt piece that goes there? Also is there gathering on the front bodice at the waist? I can only assume so since this piece was wider at the waist than the pants front. Also there is no indication that this pattern came with pieces for the belt or bows as shown on the cover picture. I assume that the instructions state to draft them out from scratch? Any help you could give to shed some light on this pattern mystery would be greatly appreciated. :)
