There is a really lovely inverted pleat in the back:
It's nice and toasty and I'm wearing it a lot!!
I have two questions for all of you:
1) What year/decade do you think this coat is from (I'm guessing 1950's/1960's--but would love to hear your thoughts)
2) I would love to eventually make a dress to go with this coat. I haven't sewn much (or anything really from the 50's or 60's...though I am itching to try a pattern out). Is there a pattern you've seen that you think would look fabulous with this coat? Do share!!
I think its from the mid-50's, made to go over a full-skirted dress. Sooo cute, I'm envious of tne number of capes and coats you have.
ReplyDeleteGreat collar very pretty and it looks great on you.
ReplyDeleteIt's called a swing coat. 50's for sure.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely needs a dress with a full skirt and a petticoat :) It is lovely. What kind of fur on the collar? I just got my fur-collar coat cleaned, but it is rabbit so it is not a luxurious looking as yours. With snow boots and my fur hunters cap I look a bit Tintin goes to the Soviet!
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with the other comments: 1.) you look smashing in it, and 2.) it's perfect for a full skirt and petticoat a la Betty Draper in Mad Men. (Want some 50's-60's clothing inspiration? That is a must see for drool-worthy clothes.) I think a swing dress (from the same era) would also be appropriate.
ReplyDeleteI have about 10 vintage coats, love them all! They were so cheap at the thrift. I think I spent about the same as one coat would cost new! Yours is really pretty, love the texture and color!
ReplyDeleteIt's the same shape/style as my vintage coat with detachable fur collar (that I keep meaning to blog about) that was my mother's. She bought hers in the 1950's. The length is about the same too.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many beautiful 50's patterns I couldn't even begin to recommend one!
Oh, that's so great!! You're dead on with the date, too.
ReplyDeleteI can see it with a chic little wiggle dress- maybe in the same color as the coat with brown accents to match the fur. :)
Lovely and suits you so well! And I chime in with the 50's!
ReplyDeleteI love the coat...so much so I bought a similar style one at the thrift store...but mine is a dark brown fabric and fake fur collar and cuffs. Then I found a hat at the dollar store that almost matches...
ReplyDeleteThat coat is just fantastic! It definitely needs a lovely full skirted dress underneath. What a lovely gift, how thoughtful of your sister.
ReplyDeleteDebi, this is gorgeous! What an incredible wardrobe you are building up for yourself.
ReplyDeleteI think a nice 50s suit with a tailored jacket and slim skirt would be lovely under the fullness of the coat.

Delicious warm! It's 50s style, no doubt ... I love the neck and this coat is the perfect excuse for you to start sewing clothes swing. Wonderful!!
ReplyDeleteI am so jealous!! I have no idea what era, but I do know that if you lived in Australia I would find a way to sneak into your wardrobe and do some coat thieving! You look gorgeous.
ReplyDeletehow lovely! I wouldn't blame you if you never took it off until summer - it looks so warm!
