Lisbon Costume Museum

It was really fun to read all the comments on the first Lisbon post! It's great to see how many of you have connections to Lisbon (or those that have it on their list of 'must see' places).  I really love it!

One evening I was able to go to the Costume Museum in the north of the city.  It was a bit tricky to find but wow, what a treasure! The building itself is absolutely amazing--I think it was once a large mansion or some sort of cathedral!  They had a great exhibit starting in the 1700's and ending in modern day with some contemporary Lisbon designers.  Here's a few of my favourite things (in order of time period--starting for the oldest)...

The examples of 19th century embroidery were absolutely fantastic!!

The museum itself was in such an amazing building and the layout was stunning:

David, our friend Dave and I were the only ones in the museum--we had it all to ourselves!!

This is in the Costume Museum...which makes me think it was once a palace or a church...

I fell in love with this coat/jacket from the turn of the century:

Look at the amazing button details:

They had the most amazing 1920's beaded dresses...

There were also lot of contemporary design displays:

Next to the Costume Museum is the city's botanical garden! Wow--absolutely beautiful!  David and I really enjoyed it (and I got to wear my new purple halter top and skirt!!)

  1. What a wonderful and inspiring trip. I cannot imagine wearing some of the undergarments and corsets! I saw a similar exhibit at the V & A a few years ago. It is wonderful that so much has survived. Your purple halter top and skirt are the perfect fashion for a summer in Lisbon.

  3. Deb - I love that jacket too - still trying to figure out how the two-fabric covered buttons were made.

  6. If I ever make it to Lisbon, I must visit the museum. If the place is a former palace, you probably saw the chapel, many royals had their own.

  8. Definitely adorable! You enjoyed the scenery and the walk through the museum .... Wow! I made a trip to Madrid a few years ago and there is a vast museum of costume there ... I spent hours wandering through all the wonders and one thing that caught my attention was how small were the costumes of two centuries ago ... I asked the guard if they were dressed as children and the guard told me that no ... simply, the generations are getting higher ... This happened to you?!

  12. Lisbon is now on my bucket list for sure.I love the work that has gone into the undergarments. Nothing like a pretty pair of drawers to make you feel happy! Lucky you having the place to yourself, I got lucky at The Museum at FIT in NYC earlier this year. It was lovely to drool away at everything without being bumped into or rushed along. You look fab in purple!

  13. Wow, such wonderful costumes. I'm always amazed at the fine details put into clothing in the era when everything was handmade. It was already hard work just making the clothes to say nothing of the embellishment. Why has ease of manufacture made modern clothes simpler and plainer?
