The Graduation Ball

I'm so excited to share some of the photos from the Graduation Ball.  It was definitely one of the highlights of the week!

It was a black tie event and originally I was planning on making a gown, but I decided to wear one of the gowns I'd already made!  David helped me choose between the two gowns (this one--a 1934 pattern from Wearing History and my 'Serenity' gown) and the Wearing History gown was the clear winner.

This one has really neat art deco detailing on the back.  What's that in the background, you ask?

Why, it's a giant ice sculpture of one of the university buildings....

It's not just any ice sculpture, but one that has a long straw inside.  You can pour your drink in the top and then catch it in your mouth at the bottom (eeeewwww....)  As you can imagine, the ice sculpture had its own guard (teehee).

While we didn't put our mouths anywhere near the ice scuplture, we did partake of another cool treat--ice cream!  There was also live music, free champagne and lots of socializing!

And of course, fun photos! Hats off to all the grads!!

  7. Thank you - I love the way Debi looks in that gown.   I'm hoping she'll make it again in blue.  I think it would look amazing on her.

  8. Thank you!
The photos were Debi's idea and I'm very glad she suggested it.  The photographers were very nice, and had lots of fun props.  Debi chose the hats.  I'd opted out of the formal graduation photos but these were fun and natural.

  9. Ha ha ha.  Yes, we are.
St Andrews knows how to throw a good shindig.  Ice Cream is always made available from our local parlour, Janetta's, and it's usually a welcome treat at just the right point in the evening.
The bar area was insane, so it was nice to sneak off together and just watch the slot car races, have some 'scream, take photos, and have a few dances before we got together with the big group.

  10. Thank you!
Seems there are more than a few ice cream fans.   We'll have to include a trip to either Janetta's or a parlour in Edinburgh for the next sew meet-up!

I have to just say, I followed your progress on the Bonnie Prince Charlie jacket with real interest, it turned out perfectly and I'm sure your graduation was extra special because it was all such a team effort! Congratulations. x

Yes, Debi looked absolutely stunning, and I felt very proud to have her on my arm at such a grand event.   The outfit did turn out perfectly, and I'm still receiving compliments on it.

Graduation was indeed extra special because of it.

Yes, she looked amazing in it.   I'm hoping she'll sew another version in blue.   Dark blue with powder/light blue highlights.

  26. Thank you, To Boldly Sew (the Trekkie in me salutes you)!

The dress is one of my all time favourites of Debi's projects.   I'm hoping she'll make another sometime in the near future.

Of course, that means, I'll have to find another event for her to wear it to...

  30. Thank you, Erika.   I honestly do not have any skills - Debi did the hardest parts, and her attention to detail and true skill was evident in every stitch.  I sewed on buttons, hand-stitched the bowtie, and ironed the lapels into submission.   Debi did all the hard work.

Debi does look amazing in that dress  - it's truly one of my top favourites in her collection.   I really want her to make it in blue as well.   I love it when she wears blue.   That said, she sizzles in red, and I hope to find another occasion for her to wear this outfit.

I really enjoyed overhearing the comments from other women at the ball - St Andrews is a very "posh" fashion-conscious crowd; her gown really stood out, and the fashionistas took notice.
