Which gown to make?

Thank you everyone for your wonderful support for the Weaving Destination social enterprise! We still have some 100% organic handwoven fabric and beautiful silk and cotton scarves available. Check out the Etsy shop.

I received some very exciting news this weekend.  The training course I attended called 'Ingenious Women' that sparked Javita and I to start the Weaving Destination social enterprise, has been shortlisted for a Times Higher Education Award!

This is basically the higher education equivalent of the Oscars!  Javita and I have been asked to attend and I am OVER THE MOON!  It's a black tie awards ceremony to be held in London at the end of November...yipppeeeee

The most important question is which 1940 gown to make?  I've narrowed it down to the short length version of McCall 3730 or the full length McCall 3914:
Which one do you think I should make?  I can't wait!!!

  1. Hands down - 3914! Black tie event BEGS for a full length gown. You can wear the shorter dress any other time. How often do you get to make and wear a full length gown?

  2. 3914 without a doubt. The shoulders on the 3790 are way too much. Good luck. X

  3. Another vote for 3914 - it has to be a long gown!

  4. Oh Debbie your news is so exciting. Looks like I am in the minority but I think 3730, it is so unusual with the front panel and it reminds me of Rita Hayworth.

  5. Debbie, black tie demands a full length gown, 3914 is a classic

  6. Congratulations! That
invitation must have been both very exciting and rewarding to receive. I hate to do this, but I’d like to throw a
spanner in the works and suggest a long version of 3730. It is gorgeous. Plus, it has sleeves, which come in handy at
the end of November... If that isn’t possible for some reason (lack of material
could be a plausible reason I’m guessing looking at the scope of the skirt!), I’d
go for 3914 with it’s lovely, daintiness and little bolero. That could be truly stunning. Of course, you will look fantastic as always,
whichever one you choose. Rachel J

  7. Great news Debi, well deserved! I'm with the comment made by the first lady that a 3730 full length version would be stunning ...

  10. Yay!!!!! That is such great news!!!!! I like both gowns, too, but it would be so fun to wear a full-length version!

  11. 3914, Debi, please. I'm not a huge fan of the gathers on 3730 or those puffy sleeve heads. 3914, on the other hand, is elegant and understated.

  12. 3914 for me too. I really like the lace bolero. Congrats to you and Javita! That's so exciting!!

  13. 3914 would look lovely and be very appropriate for a black tie event. Congratulations!

  14. Congratulations to you both! They're both lovely patterns. The full length one with the lace bolero would be so stunning.

  15. Well, my thinking on black tie is: how often do you get to wear a gown!?!?!? But they are both beautiful patterns.

  16. I like the long version of 3914. I'm thinking you'll need a gown for a black tie event. Congratulations!

  17. I never understand why people wear cocktail length gowns to the Oscars. Therefore: 3914, absolutely!

  18. Congratulations! I think 3914 would fit the occasion perfectly!

  19. Oh, how exciting! Congratulations! I would say you'll be warmer in the long sleeve version, but the little jacket on 3914 could easily be made a sheer long sleeve and would look so glamorous with some fabulous vintagey fur (fake will do). You're definitely going to look like you're going to the Oscars either way!

  20. Congratulations! And you absolutely must go for the full length one for an awards ceremony, darling! Classic Hollywood.

  23. 3730! You'll sparkle like the very stars above!

  24. Yay, congratulations you guys!!! Both those patterns are stunning, but the back of McCall 3914 is an unbeatable detail for me ;o)

  25. I think chances to wear a full length gown are few and and far between so it's 3914for me

  28. I love Pattern 3914, the black lace overlay with that short jacket is gorgeous!

  29. For black tie, I'd go for the 3914 as the other dress is just not dressy enough!

  30. 3730 gets my vote! although I'd do the long skirt, were I you -- short sleeves, long skirt. The other dress is just a bandeau over a gored semi-circle, with a quite pedestrian bolero. I wore something very similar to 3914 at my first grown-up dance, in 1976. The only thing that made it more than a glorified sundress was that it was made up in dark emerald-green velveteen. Even so, another girl on my hall had made the exact same dress, in the exact same shade of green. (Hers was velvet; my pocketbook was not as deep as hers.) She lent me very nice shoes to wear with my dress; we made sure to be seen next to one another at the dance; we've been good friends ever since.

  31. How exciting!!!!! I think I would personally go for the shorter length, but both dresses are beautiful! I know it's a little ways away yet, but have fun at the Awards!

  32. Oh, the purple one looks so lovely

  33. Hi Debi, I'd do McCall's 3730 in the long version but without the sleeves, in a dark colour like navy, for a red carpet look. I love sewing evening wear! Have fun!

  34. Ohhh, full length, please!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Full length! What colour is it going to be though? If you and Javita are going bold, so will I. I have turquoise with rainbows in mind... photos to follow. :)

  36. ooohhh...is that a dare ;-) hehehehe....I was thinking of doing the black lace version...but may have a pop of colour somewhere. Ok, you MUST send me photos ...
