You can't really see from the pattern, but there is an underbody camisole which is attached to the skirt. The 'jacket' is completely separate from the dress. I finished up the underbody and skirt this weekend and here's what it looks like:
If the bodice wasn't so low cut, I would contemplate just wearing this on it's own. The v-point is very flattering. Though it is definitely making me think about buying another EvaDress reproduction pattern with very similar lines (a 1938 McCall pattern):
I wrapped each seam edge with the seam binding like such:
The inside seams look like this:
Phew! And that's just the underbody and skirt....now to the jacket!

ReplyDeleteI really can't wait to see this when it's finished! I love that Hug Snug, it's awesome. I'm usually stuck with the corse bias tape for seam binding. It's a really great detail that actually probably better than overcasting.
ReplyDeleteSurely this is one of those times to use the run and fell seam for the camisole, then you would have a much smoother and more comfortable fit. By the way did you complete making the 1935 cap outfit you started before the move. Just longing to see it finished.

ReplyDeleteAt an open house this weekend I saw a 60s coat dress with an underbody. Interesting concept. My favorite part of the day was seeing two vintage suits!
That is one crazy pattern! Good luck babes, I wouldn't usually be daring that kinda thing, but this year because of the Sew Weekly I'm going to extend myself! Perhaps I should go to etsy and look for tricky patterns! Ha ha!
ReplyDeleteGreat pattern. I recently found some iron on seam binding from the 60s on ebay. I think it would be great for light fabrics like satin.

Oh I see! So it can still be worn as a dress without the jacket? I thought you might have to always keep the jacket on. This outfit is so far out of my comfort zone - I am in awe!
