This was my first time sewing a Burda pattern. I did struggle a bit with the different style of instructions. I've been getting Burda magazines for awhile (I don't have a subscription but I buy them from the newstand when I can find them) so I really want to learn how to make their patterns. This was a good first try. The dress was somewhat difficult to fit in the bodice. I think this may be because I have fairly narrow shoulders. Despite fitting it in the bust area, the shoulders and the back, there was still a bit of gaping in the bust area. I decided one way to remedy this (without making a new dress) and to add an interesting feature would be to do piping in the same polka dot fabric as my apron.
The cord I used was the only thing we had around the house and that was a cord used to wrap presents. I put the cord in the polka dot fabric and wrapped it up and sewed it up as piping to add to the neckline and armholes of the dress. I really like how it turned out.
Here's a close-up of the piping on the sleeve and neckline:
Here's some outside photos:
I know it's cheesy but I absolutely love the red telephone booths!
I ended up finding some perfect red polka dot ribbon at Edinburgh Fabrics that matches the piping perfectly:
I wore this dress out to celebrate David's birthday last Friday! We went to a wonderful restaurant, had a lovely dinner and champagne!
Wowza!
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous Debi, thanks for posting some detailed pics. I've yet to venture into the world of Burda...I think I'm missing out!
ReplyDeletei think this bodice was trouble for EVERYONE. i have broad shoulders and it gaped on me, go figure.
ReplyDeletei just love this dress all over again, especially seeing how the lining peeks out.
never cheesy: red telephone booths, and shots big ass glasses of bubbly.
Mmmmmeeeee-yow! So you can rock the bombshell look, too. :)
ReplyDeleteSo pretty Debi. Perfect Little black dress :-)
ReplyDeletePerfect! You did a great job on that dress!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! It's fun making your own piping. I love the shape of the dress, looks wonderful on your frame. I also love the photos around the telephone booth, very cute touch.
ReplyDeleteI love how the polka dots show! I was tickled pink when I saw that on the apron post! Yay!
ReplyDeleteThis is darling!! I love the polka dot piping. Adds such fun!
ReplyDeleteLove the polka dot bindings.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous. Love the piping and the shape of the dress.
ReplyDeleteI love the piping (for which I've been developing quite the soft spot lately) and the matching facing. Wonderful small details that really make the dress. So cool. :)
ReplyDeleteI love this dress so much that I think I am going to have to break my rule of only getting thrifted patterns. You made it look really special.
ReplyDeleteWonderful use of piping, Debi. Just lovely!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it!! Thank you for motivating me!!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous dress Debi and I love the polka dot piping and matching ribbon! I've just bought my first Burda pattern and am a bit terrified, thanks for motivating me. x
ReplyDeletePS. So funny that your husband and I are almost twins by one day!
Another beeuoooootiful dress. Are you going to wear that on your 14 May outing?!
ReplyDeleteI really love it, and the piping was a great touch!
ReplyDeleteSO cute! I just love that you added the polka dot piping and ribbon belt--it really adds some flair and character to a LBD! :) If it makes you feel any better, I have had issues with fitting BurdaStyle patterns on myself in the past too. I think it might be the fit model? Or maybe it's just me. ;) hehe!

That's so cute on! I have this on a mental "to sew" list, but also have narrow shoulders :-(. The other thing you may have noticed is that Burda magazine patterns are usually lower cut than expected, which can also cause problems!
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely. I want to make this burda dress too, it's such a classic style.
ReplyDeleteGreat job! I think you look really at home in vintage styles. It doesn't look costumey at all - just like something you'd wear every day.
ReplyDeleteVery Cute! I liked this Burda dress when I saw it in the magazine! good job! x
ReplyDeleteReally lovely - dig the idea of the interesting inner/piping bit and it looks really sexy and elegant on you!
ReplyDeleteYou are a wonderful inspiration! If you have time check out the dress I made for my 21 year old daughter for Easter http://rozyhomemaker.blogspot.com/2011/04/easter-dress-for-noble.html
ReplyDeleteI've been sewing for about 40 years and this is the first time I've made something without a complete pattern. What an adventure! But like I said you are an inspiration. Keep up the great work!
Lovely! I adore the matching ribbon - the red just adds so much to the dress! And yay for champagne!
ReplyDeleteI was considering making this pattern and it looks so lovely now I will definitely try it.
ReplyDeleteummmmm how much do I LOVE THIS DRESS ?! You did a wonderful job and it looks great on you. I love Burda style - but feel too frightened to make anything from it yet. Which is a shame as I absolutely LOVE a skirt from October 2011 ! :-))
