There's one more 'Sew Cinematic Challenge' outfit I want to make before I tackle my Gilda gown and that's the Aviator dress pictured above. Have you seen the movie 'The Aviator'? It has some fabulous fashions in it. My favourite are those worn by Kate Beckinsale (as Ava Gardner).

Gah! Isn't this dress divine? Ok, I'd love to hear your thoughts about the actual movie. I'll be honest in that I didn't really like it. I felt it painted Howard Hughes in an overly dramatic (as only Hollywood can do it) light. I guess the screenwriting left me wanting a bit more....
LOVE this photo of Kate Beckinsale reading a McCall's magazine:

So the project I want to tackle is this colour-blocked dress with the cute keyhole opening and funky sleeves:

I've been wanting to do this dress for ages (ever since last year's Sew Weekly Oscar challenge) and I have the perfect pattern for it--Advance 4143:
I'm making View A without the pockets in the same colour combination! Don't you love it when you find the perfect pattern?
Oh what a fantastic Pattern.
ReplyDeleteCant wait to see how it comes out. x
Wow that really is the perfect pattern for that dress! I can't wait to see how you sew it up.
ReplyDeleteAviator - Yeah, I agree. It was a while ago that I saw it, but what I remember is that I spent the whole movie waiting for it to get better and really grab me. It never did.
Wow Debi, what a great pattern and source of inspiration. I can't wait to see it.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, I can´t wait to see your finished dress! The colour combination is something I never would have thought about but it´s so good looking and the pattern really is perfect for it.
ReplyDeleteWow - what a perfect pattern for this. Me? I'd be trying to figure out how to do that hat!!
ReplyDeleteWow! That IS the perfect pattern! Can't wait to see the finished product, it's going to be gorgeous...!
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be so awesome! I can't wait to see it! I really liked the Aviator, mostly Cate Blanchett as Katherine Hepburn...
ReplyDeleteWow, I can't believe that you found such a great pattern. The clothes from that time period are so detailed and "finished" looking. Can't wait to see your interpretation.
ReplyDeleteOoh, Debi! I love it! What a gorgeous dress for you! I really like the Aviator (plus my friend Brian Fortuna was in it as a dancer) and I always love a good dose of Leo!
ReplyDeleteSwoon this is going to be amazing, please can you come make my wardrobe for me?! Yeah I like the film just because of who it is about, but it definitely lacks something, realism maybe? but what to expect from Hollywood, plus Beckinsale looks nothing like Ava, she is beautiful though. x
ReplyDeleteThis will look GORGEOUS on you! I can't wait to see it!
ReplyDeleteI hear Kate did tons of research for this role. She studied Ava in every way.
ReplyDeletewow - thats going to be amazing! I can't wait to see how you do it :) her outfits are to die for!
ReplyDeleteWow! I had no idea Brian Fortuna was in it!!! I followed him on Strictly!!! How cool is that?
ReplyDeleteI didn't care for The Aviator either but, your inspiration is lovely! That is a perfect pattern! What luck! I can't wait to see it :-)
ReplyDeleteI know I saw the movie, but apparently it didn't make much of an impression on me. I don't care much for DiCaprio, so probably I spent the whole time cringing at his performance. Anyway, I love that dress so much! What a great color combination. I would even add that pretty patterned scarf at the neck, it seems to set the whole thing off perfectly.
ReplyDeleteThat is an amazing pattern find. I can hardly wait to see your version!
that is definitely the perfect pattern! looking forward to seeing your results.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I LOVED the movie, but it may be because I have read books about Howard Hughes, Jean Harlow, and Ava Gardner. I love anything that has to do with Old Hollywood star's lives and you can't go wrong with Leonardo Dicaprio :) I cannot wait to see how your dress turns out. You will give Kate Beckinsale a run for her money!!!
ReplyDeleteI loved the costumes in this film but like you I felt the script was lacking something, it did have some amazing hats in though. I'd love to have a go at making the hat to match this outfit for you, if your interested let me know.
ReplyDeleteThat would be AMAZING! It's such a beautiful hat!!! Do tell me more!!
ReplyDeleteI'm so bummed I wasn't able to participate in this, I really have to catch up with some of the amazing things I've seen!
ReplyDeleteThat looks like just the perfect pattern, it was like it was meant to be! Are you going to change how the sleeves are set in to get that higher almost zig zag look of her dress? I know if anyone would know how, it would be you. :) Either way, I'm sure it'll be awesome!
I haven't seen the movie yet but had been intending to, so I'll approach with some caution...
it's really something isn't it, looking at it I think it's a fabric covered shape rather than felt, so I could have a go in some random fabric and see what I can do, then once you have your fabric for the outfit I could do you one to match. feel free to e mail me if your interested info@bmillinery.com and we can look at having a go.
ReplyDeleteI loved the costumes but yea the movie was kind of boring. I asked my Grammy if she was going to see it (typically loves historical movies) and she said "Uug I didn't like Howard Hughes then I don't think I want to watch a movie about him." That really made me laugh!
