I love this McCall advertisement (from my 1940 McCall Needlework Magazine):
The illustration features three 1940 McCall dresses (3852, 3867 and 3878 from left to right). Though isn't the plane angled a little sharply downwards? eeps!
My favourite part is the last sentence: "
It's scientific in EVERY DETAIL --eliminates error, saves my time" hmmm....maybe if I repeat this mantra I'll sew quicker and without any mistakes...lol
Happy Saturday!
Wow:) I have an add for a sewing machine(turn of the century) which warns you not to use the leisure time created by the efficency of the machine with book reading say, but to use that time to get more sewing and cleaning done. - lol So 30 years later they were finally telling us to embrace that leisure time... so interesting.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
That's really fascinating! Makes me want to find a 1960s ad to see how it changed further!!!
DeleteTeeheehee! I need more leisure hours-- do you think this would work for me?
ReplyDeleteI know, right? That would be fabulous!
DeleteThe angle of attack of that aircraft concerns me! As TG would say! It's heading straight for the ground.
ReplyDeleteI mustn't be doing it right.....a pattern - McCalls or otherwise - has never magically prevented me from making mistakes :). Though perhaps I'm just not scientific enough....
ReplyDeleteHappy Saturday to you too!
ReplyDeleteI doubt anything would stop me making mistakes, but I still love my hobbies!

That's nice! I love these vintage snippets.
ReplyDelete"My dress goes together in 1, 2, 3, order". lol I have sewing ADD so sometimes my garments go together in 1, 6, 2, 4 order haha! My sewing is my leisure hours and I always want more of those ;)
ReplyDeleteI love vintage illustrations like these... but yes - I think someone in the art dept got a bit design-happy when they decided to have the plane depicted in a nose-dive.... eep indeed!

Wow eh... And the accurate printed lines always end up as a perfectly fitted garment, don't they??
ReplyDeleteIn fact, althought the tone has changed a bit, I think it's not such a big leap from this to the blurps on today's easy-to-make patterns.
- About that plane, I think it's a passenger jet, so there's probably a landing strip just behind the structure on the right. Unless this leaflet was intended for the British market and the subliminal message here is: "finish you're new dress in time for the sprint to the airraid shelter"....
- About leisure time, in most of my 40's and 50's magazines, it is acknowledged that a woman's job is never really done and those of a gentle disposition should take care not to get overworked. The editors tend to look kindly upon such constructive and wholesome leisure activities as reading, useful and decorative crafts, walking and engaging in sports. Cultural activities such as visiting museums, the theatre and concerts also get the stamp of approval but are not quite considered to be leisure activities.
i love glimpses of things like this! and i wouldn't mind some one two three notches in today's patterns. or hrm.... is that how you're meant to follow them? save the seams with three notches for last?
