That's Sew Cinematic: Influenced by Rita!
When I was first thinking about what I wanted to sew for the Sew Cinematic Challenge, all I could think about was Rita Hayworth and her fabulous outfits (all the photos from here).
All of my favourite movies have Rita in them (Cover Girl, You were Never Lovelier, Gilda...among others)! I just love her sense of style.
Perhaps my favourite Rita outfits are the fabulous gowns that she wears!
Of course you know there is ONE gown. THE gown that I most associate with Rita:
I HAVE to make this gown (from the movie Gilda) and I have the perfect event. David is graduating from his Master's programme this June and they are having a black tie ball. How fun does that sound??? This dress would be perfect for just such an occasion!
I'll be sure to do lots of posts on the construction process. I'm already thinking of using Gertie's bombshell dress for the bodice of the gown! I'm doing the version of the gown pictured above (sans the big bow). This will probably be the last of my Sew Cinematic creations but I had to share my plans for it first because I'm so excited!!!
What do you think? Would you wear the Gilda gown? Which one of Rita's other outfits do you love the most?

Would I wear the Gilda gown? Do you really have to ask?! ;)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is the stunning lace and illusion gown she wears in the "I'm Old Fashioned" number in "You Were Never Lovelier." (It's pictured above in the middle group, all the way on the left; it appears more transparent in motion.)
Rita's on my list as well! She's one of my all-time favorites. But so tragic!
ReplyDeleteI sat down and made three separate lists: Stars Whose Style I love, Movies I love, and Costumes I Love. I may end up merging the last two, but kinda think there's a difference between the "look" of a movie and the looks within the movie. (Or maybe I'm just blowing smoke up my own butt on that one). I'd like to make garments in three out of the six categories.
And as Peter said, would I wear the Gilda gown? Do fish swim and birds fly? :)
Wow! That's going to be a fantastic dress! How fun that you'll have an appropriate place to wear it too.
ReplyDeleteOh, me, oh my!!! I love that gown and am so glad you are making it! David's graduation ball is the perfect event to make its debut. Cannot wait to follow your progress. :)
ReplyDeleteThat gown is gorgeous! It will be so bombshell perfect for a black tie ball. My favorite it that white halter neck gown--drapey in all the right places and structured in all the right places, too.
ReplyDeleteIt's gorgeous, and will look gorgeous on you. are you making it in black? Or something like a midnight blue? And you MUST wear long gloves, so chic!!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see that gown in real life, I'm sure it's going to be gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteAnd that ball sounds like fun too. I've always wanted to go to ball, so I could wear dramatic gowns like Rita's and wow everyone on the dance floor :P
It's great to have an event coming up, so you can actually wear the dress. I'm lookig forward to the outcome.
ReplyDeleteRita is my all time favourite screen siren. What an amazing choice. And who doesn't love the Gilda gown. I can't wait to see it made up.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! Would I wear the Gilda Gown, oh yes in fact I have worn many a gown like this, although all vintage, I never made them, so I can't wait to see you making it!
ReplyDeleteThis is going to look amazing! I can't wait to see the finished version all dressed up, you are going to look fantastic I reckon!
ReplyDeleteOh wow! The Gilda gown is just amazing, I cant wait to see this one!
ReplyDeleteLove Rita and can't wait to see your fabulous version! I don't wear strapless myself so were I to pick my fave Rita dress for myself it would be one of the lovelies in your third set of photos--especially that second one.
ReplyDeleteOh, I love Rita! She's just so lovely! And you will look just as stunning in this number!
ReplyDeleteSo fabulous! Check out Jacques Fath (the designer of THAT gown) at the Met Museum website. They have some wonderful gowns of his and it might give some clues for construction. This is going to be awesome!
ReplyDeleteI'd definitely wear that dress - if only I had an event! It will be such fun to make it, I look forward to following along!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beauty and such timeless style! I can't pick a favourite outfit to be honest, so many of them are so stunning! I wish I had an occasion like your's coming up to wear a gown like the Gilda one. Lovely!
ReplyDeleteGilda is one of my favorite movies and I would absolutely wear that gown!! This challenge looks like so much fun and Rita is a great choice. I need to find the time for the challenge and will look into it more.
ReplyDeleteThat dress is gorgeous, and I just watched Gilda a couple of months ago, there were so many lovely outifits in it! Can´t wait to see your finished creation! :-)
ReplyDeleteI love Rita, but I can't chose one I love all of them
ReplyDeleteMy favorite dress is the last row of pictures and the middle picture. All of these dresses are so fabulous though!
ReplyDeleteOh SO excited you picked Rita and the Gilda dress is a classic, I would pretty much love to wear anything inspired by Rita! x
ReplyDeleteOH! I would love to see you in the Gilda gown! You would look positively radiant!
ReplyDeleteI would indeed wear it! My favorite is the bare-midriff dress she wears in Gilda. How many of her movies feature the rumba Amado Mio?
ReplyDeleteDo you sew and sell your Rita gowns, I would be interested in ordering one if you do. The gown I'm interested in is the "Amado Mio" gown from Gilda. My daughter does a USO show where she has played Rita before in the Black gown, she will be doing it again this time singing "Amado Mio". It's not until October, but I decided to start looking now. You can visit YouTube to view some of her videos, you will find my e-mail there if you are interested. enter Victoria Matthews in the search box.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sally
Your daughter is SO TALENTED!!! That is so much fun!! Unfortunately, I don't sell anything that I make (at least not yet) and am not sure if I would have time to do something before October but I'll give it a think :-) Tell your daughter I'm a new fan!!
ReplyDeleteHave you seen this book: http://wesewretro.com/2012/06/giveaway-sew-iconic/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+SewRetro+%28We+Sew+Retro%29&utm_content=Google+Reader has a pattern for the Gilda gown! :)
