Thanks for all the comments on the last post! It was so much fun to meet-up with everyone in Edinburgh and to even hear of some plans for future visits to the city!
Back to Mission McCall Mondays and today we are covering patterns 9111 to 9120 from 1937.
I'm missing the image for 9111 so first up is McCall 9112 for these fabulous culottes:
I must say that I really adore the fit of these culottes and the two small pockets on the hip line!
Next is McCall 9113:
I really like the detail of the gathered yoke and the potential for using piping and other trims.
McCall 9114 is another great dress pattern:
Though I think I might like McCall 9115 best:
Check out that great collar. I actually really like the idea of making a striped collar for a plain dress. hmmmm....
McCall 9116 is for a classic blouse pattern:
I think I just saw this pattern not too long ago on Etsy!
McCall 9117 is the only two-piece pattern in this bunch:
The blouse of the dress looks very similar to the earlier McCall 9116! I just love the swing type jacket and how it mimics the pleats in the skirt.
McCall 9118 is one of the few boy's patterns:
Love the wee suit and argyle socks!
Rounding out this week's Mission McCall Monday is pattern 9119 for another great dress:
Which one is your favourite this week? I think I'm going with 9112 and 9115.
Missing images so far: 9011, 9012, 9013, 9017, 9040, 9041, 9050, 9062, 9073, 9082, 9088, 9106, 9110, 9111 and 9120. If you want to contribute to the Mission McCall--just email me the images or pattern covers and I'll update them in the Vintage Pattern Wiki. myhappysewingplace[at]googlemail[dot]com.
9114! 9114! So lovely.
ReplyDeleteI've been wondering about the center front seam on 30s-40s dresses, because all the patterns I have feature them. Was it purely because fabric was narrower (35" rather than contemporary 60"), or does it really make a difference in the way the skirt hangs? Both front pieces seems to always be cut with the grain, so I would guess that changing it to a single front piece wouldn't change the drape. Any thoughts?
Good question! I wonder if it was because of the narrower fabric length or if it was just an aesthetic from the late 30's? I don't think it would change the drape of the dress! It's fun to see how the different cuts look...take 9114 above..I just love the soft folds at the bottom of the skirt!
DeleteAm pretty certain it was because of narrow fabric. Classic Japanese kimonos have a center-back seam for the same reason. (Center seam does offer an opportunity to sneak in some subtle shaping, but that was probably not included in these patterns.) Since so many women in U.S. used flour sack fabric for basic clothing items, it was usual to have to piece together yardage before cutting out a pattern.
DeleteEasily 9112, I adore culottes and those are no exception! They are fabulous, in particular the tailoring front and back and slightly less flared leg than is often seen.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I see 9040 is still on the awol list, I emailed it to you in October and still have the email if you want me to send it again.
ReplyDeleteHi Molly! The 9040 you sent me was from the 50's....it's crazy how they started to use the same numbering again--makes it really confusing!! I'm still searching for the 1930's 9040!!
DeleteWhile I agree that 9112 is a great pattern, I'm also really liking view A of 9116. That bow is a great detail for a blouse.
ReplyDeleteOh I love 9114, and the red dress of 9117; both so elegant and classy. They are what I'd like to look like again. (What I did look like in my twenties!)
ReplyDeleteI don't have kids, but there is a young lad who lives next door - I wonder how many swear words he would use if I asked him to wear 9118! Actually, that's not fair - he wouldn't use any swear words because he's so well behaved - I would use them on his behalf :)
ReplyDeleteheheheheh....yes, I'd like to see little boys running around in these mini suits too :)
DeleteI love those culottes, and the striped collar is just fantastic.
ReplyDeleteI confess I was the buyer of the Etsy 9116 blouse.. I'm hoping to find the 9111 culottes and so complete the outfit shown in the Feb. News here: http://img2.etsystatic.com/il_fullxfull.294382010.jpg
How's that for '30s pattern geekery? ;)
FANTASTIC! I'll keep my eyes peeled for the culottes! We must be kindred spirits :) as your plan makes perfect sense to me..hehehehe
DeleteOMG! I love them all :D
ReplyDelete9114 is so cute and shirts too!
I can't choose only one.
Thank you for sharing, Debi!

I really love these culottes. They are wonderfully designed. I was thinking about your meetings. It would be so fun to organize a tip day. Meeting at a church or something and bring a few sewing machines together. Everyone could share a trick or tip they use with sewing. And how about those vintage patterns it would be a great day to ask questions, exchange patterns and get help with that burning question of meeting bodice A to collar b. Just a thought. I was a scrapbooker for a few years and we always meet to do our craft and get ideas. Cheers.
ReplyDeleteThat would be so much fun! I really enjoy get togethers and it would be great to swap tips!!
DeleteLauren (Wearing History) sent me over this way. I just started trying to make a 1914 McCall's pattern after making Victorian gowns for years. This is a whole new language and pattern markings to me, and VERY confusing. But its interesting how modern patterns got their start and evolved from these early beginnings. Also amazing how someone ever figured this out.
ReplyDeleteVal
Hi Val! Can't wait to see your 1914 pattern!
DeleteI'm hoping someone here might be able to help me with this pattern. I'm using McCalls 6053 that I purchased from Past Patterns. http://www.pastpatterns.com/6053.html
ReplyDeleteI can't tell where one part starts and the other ends, and the directions, as I mentioned, uses terms I'm not familiar with so I don't know what they're referring to. Is this two separate pieces, one under with a collar, and the other over that's called the tunic? Or is it one piece?
Val
Fabulous pattern! I hadn't seen this one before!! Just from the pattern drawing it looks like two pieces--a yoke type piece with the collar and then the tunic piece--but I can't say for certain!
Delete9115 is my favourite too - I'd love to see it made up. And I love the culottes too!
ReplyDeleteAnother big culotte fan here. I love those long darts in the front and back; how unusual.
ReplyDeleteThe culottes look great but my favourite has to be 9114. its gorgeous.
